Celiac disease - what is it?
The body with celiac disease is hypersensitive to gluten, a protein that is found in the grains of wheat, oats, rye and barley. It is not known why some people are ill, while others are not. There are many reasons why genes are responsible for the development of celiac disease. It is also known that people suffering from one of the so-called autoimmune diseases (for example, rheumatoid arthritis, type I diabetes, Hashimoto's disease). According to another theory, the triggering factor may be a decrease in immunity after infection (for example, after the flu) or severe stress.
Strange symptoms of celiac disease
Everyone’s illness can be different. Often this makes itself felt with digestive problems - the patient is tired of diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain. In other cases, it sends unusual signals. There is:
- weight loss,
- bleeding tendency,
- anemia
- pain in bones and joints,
- muscle spasms,
- inflammation of the skin,
swelling
- menstrual irregularities,
- impotence.
These symptoms are the result of the disappearance of the villi of the small intestine and, consequently, malabsorption of vitamins and trace elements (including iron, folic acid, vitamins A, D, K and group B).
Specialist help
If the doctor suspects celiac disease, he should refer the patient to a gastroenterologist. The specialist, on the other hand, recommends a test to determine specific IgA antibodies to tissue transglutaminase (tTG). A positive result may be a disease. Sometimes additional blood tests are needed. In addition, an intestinal biopsy is usually performed. Thanks to this, you can evaluate the level of the disease.

There are no cures for celiac disease. The only way to eliminate discomfort is to remove gluten from the diet. This is not so simple, because it is hidden in many products, and not only in cereals, such as sausages, vegetable products. Therefore, patients should carefully read the labels.
